Post Treatment Choices and Permission Granted to Avoid Negative Influences
One of the resulting components of a breast cancer diagnosis and bilateral mastectomy is the “freedom” to grant myself permission to avoid negative influences and to make changes. Obviously, many can create the life of choice without having the cancer experience, but my awareness came after diagnosis and treatment. WoooHooo! When I needed time to rest or time to be alone or time just to sit in the sun, at first I needed it so much that it became easy to say, ‘no’ to invitations cuz I was just too depleted to accept them. Turned out that I was practicing my ‘no’ muscles.
Have you noticed that there are times when being around certain individuals or groups of people leaves you with a sense of discomfort? It could be at work with a co-worker or at leisure with an acquaintance. Here’s a short list of how I’d describe it:
• Draining
• Exhausting
• Frustrating
• Uncomfortable
• Congested
• Clogged
• Dis-quieting
We’re each hard wired with different amounts of sensitivity, so for some, this note may not be applicable. For those of us more sensitively wired, the ‘outside’ world can be over-whelming and have a negative effect even just due the amount of the input. It was helpful to me to learn that I needed to “protect myself” from being adversely affected and that I actually had a choice to avoid situations that seemed negative to me.
After cancer and bilateral mastectomy I now easily say, “no, thank you” to situations I know will affect me negatively or cause me to feel one of the words from the list above. So, I say to myself, “Permission granted.”
Permission is also granted for seeking and inviting the healing medicine of laughter, being at the park, sitting in the sunshine, singing, connecting with pets or dogs on the trail, making eye contact with a baby while in line at the market, exchanging ‘howdy’ with an older person. Those connections and expressions of love are the perfect antidote to negative influences; you’ll find others. Make that choice!
